It is renowned for its pivotal role in World War II and is currently the site of a major modern urban development project, New Alamein City, a fourth-generation city designed to be a year-round hub for tourism, education, and residential living on the North Coast. The new city includes residential skyscrapers (such as the North Edge Towers), an international university (Alamein University), hotels, a 14 km long corniche (promenade), a cultural center, an opera house, and a regional medical center, and aims to accommodate over 3 million residents and boost the national economy by attracting investment and creating job opportunities.
