It serves as a major hub for the country's national carrier, Kuwait Airways, and the budget airline Jazeera Airways. The airport is a public and military facility, with a portion of the complex housing the Abdullah Al-Mubarak Air Base and is undergoing a major expansion as part of Kuwait Vision 2035 to position itself as a major regional air hub.
