Total immersion vs partial immersion

Thermometers are immersed into the liquid to a specific immersion length. This is 76mm for all Brannan thermometers. The remaining section of the stem is exposed to the air and is often called the energent stem column.

Warnings over inaccurate infrared thermometers in UK

As fever is widely documented as a key symptom of Coronavirus, naturally the pandemic has seen a huge surge in demand for non-contact temperature measuring devices, including infrared thermometers. Unfortunately, this has allowed a lot of unregulated and inaccurate instruments to infiltrate the UK market.

Dial thermometers - clip on pipe thermometer

Clip on pipe thermometers are ideal instruments for measuring hot and chilled pipework, owing to them being low cost and easy to install. They use a standard bimetal coil mechanism to accurately measure the temperature of the surface of the pipework they are attached to.

Dial thermometers - glycerine/oil filled

A filled thermometer is essentially a dry thermometer where the casing has been filled with fluid - usually glycerine or silicone - although other liquids can be used. They are usually used where the thermometer is going to be operating in a harsh environment and is likely to encounter vibrating loads and dynamic shock.

Dial thermometers - liquid expansion

A liquid expansion thermometer works by using the thermal expansion of a liquid within a capillary tube to measure temperature. The precision of this method varies by the liquid used, but all use the fact that when most liquids are heated, they expand.

Dial thermometers - test plugs

Self-sealing test plugs with screw connections and rubber self-sealing inserts are predominantly used on pipework installations allowing accessible tapping points for temperature instruments, with a maximum probe diameter of 4mm, when testing, maintaining, and commissioning HVAC installations.

Dial thermometers - thermowells

A thermowell is a hollowed-out piece of metal and are designed to protect against high temperatures, pressure and harsh environments which may cause damage to a temperature sensor. Thermowells encase and protect temperature sensors from harmful effects they are immersed into by insulating the temperature sensor against the temperature of the process.

Dial thermometers - types of dial thermometers

A dial thermometer uses a needle on a circular scale which indicates changes in temperature when used in certain operating systems. Dial thermometers consist of two main components: the needle and the temperature sensor. There are three different types of dial thermometers and each work in different ways, these are:
