A hydrometer is a common instrument used within the beer and wine industry. This instrument measures specific gravity of liquids and is used to indicate the rate in which yeast turns sugar into alcohol.
Often calibration is required due to the way the hydrometer has been manufactured. The scale may have applied incorrectly, or the glue holding the scale may not be strong enough to prevent the scale from moving. Therefore, calibration is needed to apply any corrections to the reading. Most laboratories use Cuckow’s method. This involves using a balance to measure the apparent mass of the hydrometer while it is immersed to several levels in a single liquid of known density.
